From the Collections—Dollhouse with Handmade Furniture, ca. 1920s

27, January 2010

Herman Otto made this elaborate dollhouse for the Leonard Strauss children in the 1920s. Strauss, a retired executive at former retailer Famous-Barr, eventually passed it on to the Jack Chapnick family in the 1950s. After their daughter Marilyn outgrew it, her cousin Barbara played with it. When the dollhouse was returned to Marilyn’s family, it was placed in their winery as decoration after commissioning the Missouri History Museum to refurbish it. Every furnishing in the dollhouse is handmade, from the grand piano to the soap dish complete with a bar of soap.
